It’s always an honour to win an award, but when you are nominated for that award by those you work with every day, it’s especially meaningful.

On June 22, 2015, Eastern Health announced the recipients of the organization’s fifth annual CEO Awards of Excellence. The awards are designed to recognize and express appreciation for the outstanding contributions and achievements of employees whose work helps support our vision of Healthy People, Healthy Communities.

A total of seven winners were selected from among 78 nominations in the categories of Leadership, Mentoring, Human Spirit, Innovation, Safety, Service and Connectedness.

“These winners are leading examples of our employees who work diligently to improve, support, protect and save the lives of those we serve each day,” says David Diamond, President and CEO of Eastern Health. “The CEO Awards of Excellence allow us to formally express our appreciation for their outstanding commitment to their work.”

Accepting the Awards

Below are short videos of this year’s Eastern Health award winners accepting their CEO Award of Excellence.

In the category of Leadership, Christine (Chris) Power, division manager with the Cancer Care Program of Newfoundland and Labrador. Chris has made significant and unique contributions to the program with her knowledge, family-centered approach and innovative skills that come with her 35 years of experience.

In the category of Mentoring, Georgina Hickey, care facilitator at the St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s. In everyday practice, Georgina mentors nurses, physicians and allied health professionals in a way that is appreciated, trusted and respected.

In the category of Human Spirit, Edwina Brenton, mental health liaison nurse at the Carbonear General Hospital. Edwina goes above and beyond her prescribed duties, in the best interests of her patients, and does it with admirable energy, joy and an infectious sense of humour.

In the category of Innovation, the Cardiac Device Clinic Team, who are part of the Cardiac and Critical Care Program at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. The team has taken an innovative technology, Remote Patient Monitoring, to improve the lives of those who have implanted pacemakers or implanted cardiac defibrillators.

In the category of Safety, Lorilee Pumphrey, food services manager with Central Kitchen in St. John’s. Lorilee is a strong advocate for safety in food services, and is committed to a variety of safety initiatives, including workplace inspections and the development of safe work practices and procedures.

In the category Service, Stephen Keough, registered nurse with the General/Thoracic Surgery Unit at the St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s. Stephen goes above and beyond his daily duties, and is dedicated to mentoring those around him by sharing his broad ranging knowledge and skills for the betterment of service to patients.

In the category of Connectedness, the Jamaican Practical Nursing Recruitment and Onboarding Team. This team demonstrated an unwavering commitment and team work through their journey of recruiting Licensed Practical Nurses for the new long-term care facility in St. John’s.
